For over 25 years, Puffy Pine Cone has been the beloved mascot of The Woodlands, embodying the spirit and values of this flourishing community. The Woodlands Development Company, now Howard Hughes, created Puffy in honor of The Woodlands’ 25th Anniversary and has been a cherished symbol ever since.
Legacies: Puffy Pine Cone and Arbor Day
Puffy Pine Cone’s birthday aligns with The Woodlands’ Arbor Day Celebration, an annual event dedicated to the community’s respect for the environment. This year, the 49th Annual Arbor Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, January 25 from 9 AM to 12 Noon at Rob Fleming Park in The Woodlands’ Village of Creekside Park. In celebration of his birthday, Puffy Pine Cone will make a special guest appearance, adding even more joy to this meaningful occasion.
Native Seedlings Giveaway
Twelve native seedlings will be given away during the celebration:
• Loblolly Pine • Sweetbay Magnolia • White Oak • Willow Oak • American Elm • Black Walnut • Black Cherry • Flowering Dogwood • Witch Hazel • Eastern Redbud • Buttonbush • False Indigo
Since 1977, nearly two million tree seedlings have been distributed to The Woodlands residents—an enduring tradition originally created and sponsored by Howard Hughes, now hosted by The Woodlands Township.
Community Impact
“Puffy Pine Cone is more than just a mascot,” says Lorrie Parise, Director of PR & Community Relations, Houston Region for Howard Hughes and one of the team members who contributed to the creation of The Woodlands’ mascot. “He represents the heart of our community—the pinecone logo that symbolizes The Woodlands itself. Much like the tree seedlings we give away on Arbor Day, Puffy represents the shared commitment we have to nurture and protect our environment, reminding us of the care, pride, and dedication we put into making this a place we all love to call home.”
