Longtime employee of Howard Hughes and resident of The Woodlands, Robert Heineman, imagined the concept of taking an existing small drainage ditch and transforming it into The Woodlands Waterway, a major amenity and a unique landmark for The Woodlands Town Center and the Greater Houston area.
Named a finalist for Best Urban Space by Urban Land Institute – Houston, The Woodlands Waterway today is a regional destination, which links to shopping and dining, commercial businesses, residential living, hospitality like The Westin at The Woodlands, entertainment including The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, public art, Town Green Park and Waterway Square, a one-acre destination featuring a stage for community performances and splashpad for children to enjoy.
The Woodlands Waterway begins at The Woodlands Mall continues through The Waterway Square District and leads into a turning basin. A lower level of The Waterway culminates into 200-acre Lake Woodlands.

- A 60,000-gallon Koi Pond is situated on a ½ acre garden, bordering The Waterway and fronting The Waterway Lofts.
- Along with public art, there are 16 creative and decorative art benches along The Waterway.
