A Carlton Woods Creekside Park Home — Pops of Color

For over 10 years, Melanie King has been successfully designing interiors for some of the most luxurious homes in The Woodlands. As a town currently experiencing a major arts boom, King is seeing many changes in her clients’ tastes.
“I definitely see a shift. The Woodlands has become to Houston what Ft. Worth is to Dallas. It’s no longer just a suburb, but more like a sophisticated sister city,” says King. “This translates to bolder design choices by the people for whom I’m working.”
Recently, King was hired to design a Michael Thurman 5,400 square foot Mediterranean style home in Carlton Woods Creekside Park for a busy married woman who is mother to 2 boys.
“I wanted to create a tailored look with a touch of femininity,” explains King. “The lines are clean and neutral with pops of plum, fuchsia and citron.”
King felt a transitional look with modern edges through the accessories and a wallcovering would complement the easy-living feeling the architecture offered.In the living room, King brought in texture and color with the pillows. She used Robert Allen’s “Lush Wave” and “Sculpted Wave” in velvet and paired it with “Chattingham” to add another layer and pattern.
In wanting something unique for the client’s office space located near the kitchen and living room, King wrapped the walls and ceiling in Phillip Jeffries’ “Union Block” on seagrass and trimmed-out the space with a modern chandelier from Circa Lighting.
For the dining room drapes, King combined a silver sheer with an embroidered platinum band fabric from Thibaut Designs to compliment the homeowners graphic art.
The heart of the home is the outdoor courtyard space. You enter the home through this area that contains a pool, spa, flat-screen television, covered outdoor kitchen and a separate 1 bedroom/1 bathroom dwelling. King selected outdoor furniture by Teak Warehouse (to the trade) from California (it is used in several resorts along the Pacific coast) to transform this spot into an outdoor living room—an extension of the indoor living spaces.
Originally from Clear Lake, King graduated from Texas A&M’s Interior Design Program. Her overarching design philosophy rests on a neutral color palette across foundational furniture pieces, trim and cabinetry with bold color and interesting textures accents in drapery, decorative objects, door handles, wall coverings and art works. She encourages her clients to never think of their home as “done,” but instead as an evolving space that needs periodic curation.
“When we think about the spaces in which we live, we usually think of the kitchen and family room, but that is not the entire story. These are great places to set the tone for your home, but your bedrooms, study and even exteriors should not be looked at as secondary, explains King. “I believe your home’s interior design is an on-going investment.
