Building Vision — Epic Shipping Container Living
Vic Cherubini, a veteran industrial sales and marketing expert and long-time resident of The Woodlands, built a studio complex out of upcycled cargo containers from the Houston Ship Channel on a campus like environment at the edge of The Woodlands.
At first blush, the use of steel shipping containers seems like the Tiny House movement gone utilitarian extreme. However, these inexpensive flood and fireproof boxes make for great home and office building material. Shipping containers range in length from 20 to 40 feet and like giant Lego bricks your imagination can run wild with how to use them.
Several years ago, Cherubini asked University of Houston architecture students for advice on how to make the best use of his 4 acres of land. The students examined the property, and worked in 3 separate groups on development concepts for the land. Then, they presented their “boards” to Cherubini, and one idea common to each group was to use steel cargo containers as building structures. As he started doing research, he realized that “upcycling” cargo containers was indeed an excellent way to build, and would result in a very special looking work environment.
Epic is now in the permitting stage for a new container building they hope to have completed by the end of this year. Keep an eye out for this signature blue block building next time you are out and about in “The Woods”.
