Just before Thanksgiving every year, lighted doves glisten the night sky in The Woodlands to kick off the holiday season. Do you know how the Lighting of the Doves first began?

Ed Lee, former CEO of The Woodlands Corporation, now The Howard Hughes Corporation, visited China and saw displays of a variety of animals, and he was taken by the doves. Lee wanted to bring this idea to The Woodlands, and in 1982, the first annual Lighting of the Doves ceremony took place in the Village of Grogan’s Mill.  Today, the Lighting of the Doves ceremony is held in The Woodlands Town Center.

“The Woodlands Township has done a tremendous job taking this event and continuing it every year. We at The Howard Hughes Corporation are proud to have created the event, and to have sponsored it for all 38 years since its inception,” said Jim Carman, President, Houston Region for The Howard Hughes Corporation.

The Lighting of the Doves will take place Saturday, November 21 and this year will be modified due to COVID-19. Read more here.
