Brunch at Broken Barrel — An Audaciously Flavorful Brunch

Brunch dish favorites include the huevos rotos with its combination of crispy potatoes, fried egg and prosciutto with harissa sauce.

Foodies in The Woodlands who long for something truly different to excite their brunch palates head to Broken Barrel Restaurant in Hughes Landing where Chef Hilda Ysusi serves up daring, colorful and flavorful fare.

Her menu offers a variety of interesting globally influenced bites from traditional dishes like scrambled eggs with bacon and avocado on toast with chili oil to more exotic options like the mussels with chorizo in a yellow coconut curry sauce with sourdough bread, and Broken Barrel’s brunch signature champagne, chicken and caviar board—which has been so successful customers demanded it also be offered at night.

Brunch dish favorites include the huevos rotos with its combination of crispy potatoes, fried egg and prosciutto with harrisa sauce and the brioche French toast with its homemade chocolate butter and strawberry syrup. Pair these dishes with the popular prickly pear based Moscow Mule or a fresh sangria or festive mimosa to enjoy the self-assured fusion of flavors that separate this restaurant from the neighboring restaurant chains.

Originally from Mexico, Chef Hilda credits her father, Julio, for her creativity. He taught very early in life to use whatever is in the pantry as a way to challenge herself and experiment with flavors. Make sure to check out the wine label collage she received from her father hung near the kitchen’s side entrance.

A Culinary Institute of America graduate, Chef Hilda later honed her cooking skills at Nestle in research development and then served as a corporate chef for Miami based Sushi-Maki.

Broken Barrel’s industrial chic yet comfortable space features a cozy wood-walled bar, a high tables area for big groups, the main dining room and a killer patio area with robust views of Lake Woodlands and the red spherical “Wind Waves” sculpture by artist Yvonne Domenge.

Finding that right balance between breakfast foods, lunch foods and great drinks is not easy. Chef Hilda rises to the occasion with her audacious cuisine from the coveted lakeside corner of Restaurant Row.
